Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting depicts a typical still life, a representation of inanimate objects used as a pretext for a pictorial exercise that reveals the painter's expressive capabilities. On a table lies a simple white tablecloth, flanked by another, more colorful fabric. We also see a couple of books and a necklace of red pearls. There are also a carafe and a glass containing various flowers. As is often the case with Kalchschmidt's still lifes, here too there is a reference to pictorial activity; in fact, a painting is depicted from behind in the background, as if leaning against a wall.
The painting is executed in oils, which gives the artist the opportunity to create a highly expressive style of painting and to experiment with impasto. He exploits the material density of oil paint to create a work with a strong, three-dimensional texture, allowing us to see how the color is applied to the canvas, as we can read the individual brushstrokes. This pictorial technique is particularly exploited in the flowers themselves, which rise from the canvas as if tangible. Overall, the painting is a realistic depiction of a moment of everyday life, where the artist, as is customary in all his paintings, from still lifes to landscapes, where Kalchschmidt demonstrates the desire to capture in the painting the atmospheric light that makes the moment unique and unrepeatable.
Emilio Kalchschmidt was a Novara painter born in 1902 and died in 1983. He was an important painter of urban landscapes, but is also remembered as an illustrator and caricaturist. In 1938, he participated in the exhibition Società per le Belle Arti ed Esposizione Permanente in Milan, displaying the paintings "Ponte Sesto" and "Paesaggio."
