Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

For artist Emilio Larocca, depicting landscape means achieving, through painting, a delicate fusion between naturalistic rendering and poetry. Indeed, his views, in which he employs a purely figurative language, remain rooted in sensory data. Yet reality seems transfigured into a lyrical interpretation that almost transports it into a dreamlike dimension. Formally, this translates into a highly delicate pictorial style where reality is represented in a rarefied manner. This means that the capture of realistic details and particulars is lost in favor of a more expressionistic language. Emilio Larocca's refined pictorial touch, which delicately synthesizes objects, plays a key role in this process. Thus, his color palette is also distinguished by a subtle anti-naturalistic tendency, whereby the color saturation expresses the artist's poetic sensibility and his almost dreamlike interpretation of the landscape.
Emilio Larocca was born in Trecchina in 1932 and passed away in 2017. In Lauria, he learned the art of fresco painting and portraiture from the master Lanziani. A figurative painter with eighty solo and group exhibitions under his belt, Larocca worked for several years in Naples. He received important awards, including the Puglia International Prize for Sacred Frescoes and the Grand Prix International d'Art Contemporaine in Venice. A painter of landscapes and large-scale altarpieces, over a fifty-year career, Larocca became a member of several academies. His paintings are held in public and private collections in Italy, as well as in the Vatican, Spain, and the Americas.
