Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings.
Emilio Montagnani tends to minimize phenomenal reality, but this exercise in reducing sensory data helps the artist go beyond the appearance of things and grasp their true essence. What remains is the spiritual and emotional concentration of the represented subject, with which Montagnani seeks to connect, eliminating any formal frills and leaving only an elegant trace to identify the figure. This trace consists of a rapid, agitated line that constructs the image or the structural application of dense color. Otherwise, the representation is influenced by the artist's gestures, through which Montagnani communicates his own emotionality.
Emilio Montagnani was a Tuscan painter active throughout the 20th century. Born in Vico d'Elsa in 1915, he died in Siena in 1974 at the age of 59. His artistic output tended to be experimental, with results that often bordered on Informal art. Particularly interested in the human figure, he created several portraits with a rapid, expressionist style.
