Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by the Second World War left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge resulted in a total rejection of any visual language, which resulted in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.
Emilio Scanavino's poetics are highly personal and recognizable in all his works. In this silkscreen, too, he employs the aesthetic of "knots" to visually represent the complexity of existential experience. It's no coincidence that we use the term "plastically," as Scanavino's language adheres to an informal aesthetic, but rather than material and gesture, the artist seems interested in the plastic qualities of his subject. Through an exceptional illusionistic technique, he gives volume and consistency to his informal art.
Emilio Scanavino was born in Genoa in 1922 and died in Milan in 1986. After his early figurative work and a phase of post-Cubist experimentation, Scanavino definitively found his artistic language in the 1950s. He explored the aesthetic of knots as a metaphor for existential torment. He is certainly considered an Informal artist, but he loves to visually capture the disturbing and complex forms into which his knots become tangled, using a technique inspired by hyperrealism.
