Description of the work
Description of the work
The defining characteristic of Emilio Tadini's work is its eclecticism. Beyond the figurative arts, this great intellectual's creativity also extended to literature, nonfiction, and poetry. Even within painting, it's difficult to define Tadini's subjects precisely because of the great freedom of action and movement he always allowed himself. The pictorial themes developed by Tadini move seamlessly between metaphysics and pop art, surrealism and symbolism. So much so that it can be said that his boundless creativity itself constitutes the subject of his works.
This work is extremely interesting in revealing the profound connection between painting and poetry in Emilio Tadini's artistic production. This plate engraving unfolds as a true piece of conceptual poetry, its brevity reflected in the small size of the painting and the minimalism of its formal means, while its hermeticism is expressed through a highly abstract language. The theme of the composition is painting itself, as indicated by the use of the written word that dominates the center of the work, almost as if to give it a title, a context. Thus, Tadini seeks to reach the purest essence of pictorial creation in a representation expressed through a refined symbolism in the extremely effective idea of the word "painting" emerging from the brush itself. It is a vivid yet ironic representation, reinforced by the abstract intervention of the two patches of pure color. We can therefore see how intense and at the same time playful Emilio Tadini's meditation is, managing to bring so many suggestions to life in such a minimal work.
Emilio Tadini was born in Milan in 1927. In 1947, he made his debut in Vittorini's "Politecnico" with a short poem, which was followed by intense critical and theoretical activity on art. Alongside his literary and critical work, he began painting from the late 1950s onwards. His first solo exhibition was held in 1961 at the Galleria del Cavallino in Venice. He held solo exhibitions abroad, including Paris, Stockholm, Brussels, London, Antwerp, the United States, and South America, in galleries, public spaces, and museums. He also participated in numerous group exhibitions. In 1978 and 1982, he was invited to the Venice Biennale. In 1986, he held a major exhibition at the Rotonda della Besana in Milan, where he displayed a series of canvases that heralded the Refugees series and the one dedicated to Italian Cities. In 1992, he held the exhibition "Oltremare" at the Galerie du Centre in Paris, and in 1993 he opened an exhibition of new works at Studio Marconi in Milan. In 2001, the city of Milan paid tribute to him with a retrospective exhibition "Emilio Tadini. Opere 1959/2000" at the Palazzo Reale. He passed away in 2002.
