Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
Bruno Emiro Callegari's artistic language tends to minimize phenomenal reality, but this exercise in reducing sensory data helps the artist go beyond the appearance of things and grasp their true essence. What remains is the spiritual and emotional concentration of the depicted figure, which Callegari seeks to connect with by almost completely eliminating formal frills, leaving only an elegant trace to identify the subject. This trace consists of a pure yet ethereal design that constructs the image as if it were a vision that gradually appears. This is combined with color, distributed in light, balanced patches in a layer of diluted, transparent glazes.
Bruno Emiro Callegari was a painter from Massarosa, born in 1944 and died in 2006. His paintings are best remembered for their ethereal, vaporous women, rendered with swift, expertly unraveled strokes amidst a sea of bold pastel hues. Callegari was also known as a saxophone player and singer.
