Description of the work
Description of the work
This engraving is a beautiful view of 19th-century Naples. The work perfectly reflects the illustrative and didactic nature of engraving, with the addition of a distinct flair for popular and folkloristic scenes.
The engraving was made from a design by W. Leitch by James Baylis Allen (1803–1876), a British engraver who, together with Edward and William Radclyffe and the Willmores, belonged to a school of landscape engravers that arose in Birmingham, where there were numerous engravers working on iron and steel artefacts.
