Engraved By J. Cousen - Siena

In this beautiful engraving, besides the evocatively illustrative nature of refined, elegant, and technically perfect vedutism, another approach prevails, typical of nineteenth-century visual arts, particularly English. Indeed, this composition is imbued with the aesthetic poetics of the "picturesque," that is, the quintessentially nineteenth-century, Romantic fascination with unspoiled nature, untouched by human activity, in which, for this reason, a wild spirit prevails. This evocative quality, however, is enhanced by the superb view of the city of Siena in the background.

Technically, the work was created with great skill in terms of naturalistic and drawn rendering, thanks to very dense hatching.

The engraving was made from a drawing by W Brockedon by John Cousen (Bradford 1804– London 1880), a famous engraver specializing in landscapes.
