Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
In this series of small paintings, painter Ennio Formigli employs a very cursive, almost sketchy style to create delightful genre scenes. For this purpose, the smudge-like technique, which he also uses in his larger works, is ideal for lending freshness and immediacy to the scenes. The entire composition is based on color, which enlivens the subjects and suggests spatial depth.
Ennio Formigli was a painter from Livorno, born in 1931 and died in 2008. He was self-taught and experimented with various stylistic movements, including Cubism and Divisionism. However, much of his work can be traced back to the influence of the post-Impressionist and post-Macchiaioli Livorno School.
