Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has always been an artist's aspiration. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Enotrio is an exquisite interpreter of his Calabrian landscape, a landscape of villages perched on rocky spurs, boats abandoned on the beach, and small train stations lost in the highlands. Everything is always immersed in a sense of supernatural solitude, where human presence is nonexistent. The sense of unreality is further accentuated by Enotrio's technique, which allows almost no atmospheric effects. The colors, often bright, stand out sharply on the surfaces of the works, imbuing the objects with purity.
Enotrio Pugliese was born in Argentina to Calabrian parents in 1920. He returned to his homeland in 1926. His artistic career began in 1946 with an exhibition at the Galleria il Cortile in Rome. He held exhibitions throughout Italy, culminating in a 1995 retrospective at the Sala Borromini in Rome. His works are held in various museums and art galleries. He was deeply sensitive to the themes of emigration and the abandonment of one's native land, which he sought to portray in the solitude of his works. He passed away in 1989 in Pizzo Calabro.
