Description of the work
Description of the work
Enrico Baj's subjects are the result of a meditation on various trends in contemporary art, but they also have a strong symbolic meaning. Baj, especially since the 1950s, has populated his works with grotesque figures with strange names. They are the evils of the world, interpreted by the artist in a mocking, ironic, and grotesque manner. They almost seem like figures straight out of a medieval fresco, interpreted by Baj according to a modern conception of sign and gesture.
Irony is a constant throughout Enrico Baj's work, so much so that his grotesque figures can be considered an evolution of Dadaist desecration. This silkscreen, however, is highly unusual, as it seems to depart from the usual language of signs and gestures that Baj uses to construct his deformed figures. The character in this lithograph, in fact, seems to have emerged from a comic book, and its stylization is more akin to Pop Art aesthetics than the Expressionist aesthetics more recurrent in Baj's poetics. The usual wallpaper-like background, always present behind Enrico Baj's grotesque subjects, is present.
Enrico Baj, Milan 1924 – Vergiate 2003. After dropping out of medical school, he began his artistic career, training at the Brera Academy. In 1951, together with Dangelo, he founded the Nuclear Painting Movement, which aimed to destroy all academicism and regenerate painting through an expressive language that utilized the automatic writing techniques of Surrealism in light of the experiences of American Abstract Expressionism. Baj's work, in particular, is influenced by the irreverent irony of Dadaism, which led him to use collage and a wide variety of materials and to develop his grotesque characters.
