Description of the work
Description of the work
The work features a deep red background, characterized by textured brushstrokes that lend depth and dynamism to the composition. A female figure stands out in the foreground, her face and neck the only visible elements. She has very pale, almost ethereal skin and short, blond hair. Her face is serious, with thin, closed lips, while her facial features are finely delineated, with meticulous attention to anatomical and expressive detail. The composition emphasizes the contrast between the figure's pale skin and the vibrant red of the background, contributing to a tense atmosphere. Enrico Colombotto Rosso stands out for his intense and dramatic painting style, combining elements of Secessionist symbolism and Art Nouveau with a strong Surrealist influence. His works often depict human figures in suspended and mysterious environments, conveying a sense of unease and solitude. His paintings are characterized by the use of intense colors and strong contrasts between subjects and backgrounds, creating an effect of isolation and emotional depth. Attention to detail in faces and expressions helps make his figures particularly evocative, evoking a sense of introspection and melancholy. His works explore themes of marginalization, human fragility, and the sense of expectation, with an aesthetic reminiscent of theater and dreamscapes. Enrico Colombotto Rosso (Turin, 1925 – 2013) was a prominent artist on the Italian painting scene in the second half of the twentieth century. Active since the early 1950s, he exhibited in prestigious international venues such as the Galérie de l'Odéon in Paris, the Providence Museum of Art, the Rome Quadriennale, and Palazzo Strozzi in Florence. His painting is characterized by a strong visionary sense, manifested in his depictions of sumptuous and dramatic female figures. The artist draws on a disturbing and surreal imagery, often inspired by the hidden reality of his city, Turin, and in particular by the atmospheres of pain and segregation of the Cottolengo in Turin. Alongside his painting, Colombotto Rosso also worked in the field of theater design, collaborating with the Teatro Stabile di Torino on works such as Strindberg's "Dance of Death" and Wilde's "Salome." His artistic production, strongly influenced by Decadentism and Visionary Expressionism, stands out for its ability to translate the anguish of contemporary man into powerful and evocative images.
