Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
In his portraits or genre scenes, Enrico Felisari typically sets the painting against a neutral, decontextualized background. Within this framework, the portrait is revealed by a light, soft touch in a minimal, pale color palette. In this way, the subject is revealed little by little, almost emerging from the surface of the painting, appearing before the viewer's gaze as a soft, diffused vision. All this makes the depiction extremely poetic and expressive, as if what we see before us were not reality, but reality transfigured in memory.
Enrico Felisari (1897-1981), a native of Castelleone, was self-taught and devoted himself primarily to landscapes, portraits, and genre scenes. His technique is essentially figurative but is influenced by a post-impressionist language that fills his subjects with luminous and atmospheric vibrations, so much so that they completely merge with the space in which they interact.
