Description of the work
Description of the work
The bas-relief depicts a scene of profound intimacy between mother and son. The female figure is captured in profile, holding her child in one arm, his body curled up towards her. The two exchange an intense, almost suspended gaze, expressing a deep emotional bond. The mother's face is characterized by delicate features and a particularly sweet expression. The formal approach is delicately classicist, with a focus on the sculptural rendering of surfaces and the fluidity of lines. The composition unfolds in a balanced manner within the bas-relief, exploiting the minimal depth to create a sense of three-dimensionality. The softness of the forms and the composure of the faces recall a late-nineteenth-century sensibility, yet filtered through a modern vision of the maternal subject. Enrico Saroldi (Carmagnola, 1878 – Milan, 1954) was an Italian sculptor and medallist, active primarily in the early twentieth century. Trained at the Brera Academy under Enrico Butti, he established himself nationally for his monumental, commemorative, and religious works, as well as for his vast production of medals. The signature "E. Saroldi" accompanied by the word "Milano," engraved next to the composition, is consistent with the Milanese period during which the artist developed much of his career.
