Description of the work
Description of the work
The clown was a popular subject among genre painters of the 1970s and 1980s. Many artists dedicated much of their careers to depicting this theme, Romano Mussolini being a prime example. Typically, the interpretation of this subject is similar for all artists who tackle it: the clown appears with his makeup designed to evoke laughter and hilarity, yet instead displays a melancholic expression. This contrast is intended to spark an empathetic dialogue with the viewer. Enrico Saviotti's artistic production consists primarily of picturesque views of his hometown, Ancona, and highly expressive portraits of clowns.
In this clown figure, Enrico Saviotti demonstrates his ability to characterize his subjects, especially through an intensely expressionistic use of color. Typical of Saviotti is the application of paint with a broad, rapid stroke, which gives the character expressiveness and character. The immediate application seems almost impulsive, yet Saviotti manages to achieve a natural rendering of the wig's movement and the mobility of the facial features. The composition is based on a harmonious balance between red and white, colors contrasted by the use of a strong black to create deep shadows.
Enrico Saviotti, a painter from Ancona (1926–1984), known by the pseudonym "Murtatela," was self-taught and had a very eventful life, including playing double bass in Rome's Dolce Vita clubs, then driving a taxi like his father, then selling clothes, and finally managing the famous Vigolo nightclub. He always cultivated a passion for painting, portraying clowns and the hidden beauties of his native Ancona in his canvases. His career culminated with an exhibition in New York in 1980.
