ENZO CANGI - FLOWERS

Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.

Looking at this work, it's clear that Enzo Cangi, in his execution of the "Still Life" or "Vase of Flowers" genre, pays particular attention to one of the leading masters in this field, Giorgio Morandi. He therefore engages in a profound process of reflection on objects in order to capture their most vivid image. In this process, the painter is aided by the light that bathes the composition, leading the artist to implement a process of reducing the objects until their true essence remains. What remains is an almost diaphanous yet extremely lively and dynamic image, shaken by genuine existential (as well as luminous) vibrations. Another fundamental element, also common to Morandi's still lifes, is obviously the formal perfection and balance of the composition (which in Cangi's work also permeates his landscapes), which hark back to the great tradition of Italian painting.

Enzo Cangi was a painter from Pieve Santo Stefano, in the province of Arezzo, born in 1938 and died in 1974. Enzo Cangi's work was distinguished above all by the development of a brushstroke that began as post-impressionist but ultimately imbued the depicted objects with existential vibrations. In this sense, a clear role model was Giorgio Morandi, as we can see from his extensive still lifes of pottery and bottles. Another major theme that permeates Enzo Cangi's work is that of the typically Tuscan rural landscape, linked above all to the minimal and rationalist realism of Ottone Rosai.
