Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
In his portraits, Enzo Faraoni demonstrates remarkable pictorial technique, allowing him to render his subjects perfectly in a naturalistic manner. There is great precision and richness of detail from a physiognomic perspective, in a pared-down approach to portraiture that focuses all attention on the subject's personality. In addition to this meticulous study of character, Enzo Faraoni also stands out for his dynamic brushstrokes, which create evocative existential vibrations. The subjects' forms blend seamlessly with the background and the painted material. His skillful use of light enhances the figures' sculptural texture. The demeanor and expressions reveal much of the realistic nature of Enzo Faraoni's portraits, further confirmed by his dynamic, vibrantly vital pictorial style.
The son of a stationmaster from Empoli, Enzo Faraoni spent his early youth in the countryside around Montelupo and Carmignano. At eleven, he enrolled in the Graphic Arts section of the Porta Romana Art Institute, where Francesco Chiappelli and Pietro Parigi taught, graduating in 1939 with a thesis on Van Gogh. It was Pietro Parigi who guided his strong affinity for line and color along the congenial path of Viani's teachings. And it was the same master who led him, along with Alessandrini, to meet Ottone Rosai. Viani's influence would reverberate in the deep tones of a 1938 Self-Portrait and the contemporary Portrait of His Father, the Stationmaster. Rosai's, broader and more engaging, would hone his innate ability to explore the inner truth of things, leading him to focus on the human figure and portraits, but also finding a congenial poetics in the study of light and shadow. After an important group exhibition in San Miniato in 1939 and the one the following year at “La Nazione”, Faraoni held his first solo exhibition in Florence in 1942 at the Galleria Il Fiore.
