Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering that immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. This work is a view of Brescia that the artist Enzo Filippini dedicated to his city.
Enzo Filippini's style, in many of his works, consists of a reduction of reality to essential forms. Although this is a bas-relief, the space is devoid of depth and becomes two-dimensional. Thus, even the subjects completely lose their volume. Everything is determined by an interplay of interlocking shapes that create a vibrant polychrome. Filippini is undoubtedly strongly influenced by Cubist decompositions or the magical geometries of Paul Klee. However, the Brescian artist replaces the rationality of the latter with a more instinctive approach to delineating forms.
Enzo Filippini was an artist originally from Brescia, where he was born in 1924 and passed away in 2001. His pictorial production was highly eclectic, with references ranging from Utrillo to Mirò, but some inspiration can also be found in Roualt. He created the emblem of the Tricolore acrobatic team. He exhibited his works in numerous locations, including London, Brescia, Lignano Riviera, Milan, Turin, Gorizia, Cortina d'Ampezzo, Rovereto, New York, Treviso, Biella, and Bergamo.
