Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
This work was created by Ercole Magrotti, whose style consistently combines realism with a delicate, impressionistic rendering of sensory details. On the one hand, the artist precisely describes the view in all its details, with a strong sense of rusticity and the everyday life of simple life. On the other, his refined painting technique allows him to convey a sense of immediacy to the canvas, thanks to rapid brushstrokes charged with atmospheric vibrations. Light thus reflects on objects, yet without interfering with the precise depiction of reality. Indeed, Magrotti possesses a keen sense of color application. In his landscapes, everything is determined by subtle tonal transitions: space, light, and the quality of the air. Objects blend naturally into the atmosphere thanks to an extremely fluid painting technique. The entire view is therefore characterised by a mixture of dense colours which guarantees unity to the composition, reiterating its character of a simple and rustic realism, immediate in its execution.
Ercole Magrotti was born in Milan in 1890 but lived in Gallarate, in the province of Varese, until 1945, when he moved to Rome, where he died in 1967. His artistic output during his Lombard period included views of Lake Varese and Lake Maggiore, some works with mountain backdrops, the markets of Luino and Varese, numerous farmhouses, and minor rural landscapes painted with a lyrical tone. After moving to Rome, the nature of his landscapes changed, but not his predilection for them.
