Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject depicted on this textile is a peacock, an animal that often appears in Eric Suriyasena's expressive research. This type of subject is frequently found in depictions of this island, particularly because the Sri Lankan peacock species exists, which is very important to the history and culture of the place.
"Batik" refers to a special process that allows fabric to be dyed and created with patterns and designs of your choice. The principle is very simple: a design is created on the fabric using wax. Where the fabric is soaked in wax, the dye is not applied, so only the exposed areas are dyed. Once the process is complete, the wax is melted with the dye. The process can be repeated several times to create the desired final design. To further enhance the overall effect, the visual impact can be enhanced by adding embroidery that reinforces the figuration and defining lines. Obviously, the style of the subject is also determined by the technique used, so overall, we can say that the work is based on a simple design and basic lines. The impact is two-dimensional, as the background is black and monochrome. The overall effect also harks back to Asian designs found in miniatures.
Erik Suriyasena is a Sri Lankan artist who has dedicated his life to batik technique and fashion. The batiks sold individually are mostly works from the 1970s, part of his early work. He then managed to make a name for himself and became one of the largest batik exporters from Asia to the rest of the world, even establishing his own company, which is now globally recognized.
