Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture has always been a beloved subject for artists. From its earliest days, portraiture was reserved for great figures, emperors, sovereigns, and wealthy members of the aristocracy. Facial expressions, the desire to characterize a person's features while also emphasizing clothing and grooming, were always sought and explored through various pictorial techniques, from sculpture to painting. Over the centuries, especially towards the end of the 19th century and the mid-20th, portraiture increasingly established itself as a means of depicting everyday reality, also bringing to light the psychological aspect of the figure depicted. In Ermanno Vanni's portraits, the intimate characterization is visible at first glance. By analyzing the truthful and everyday characteristics of reality, the soft, delicate, and cool colors depicted blend well with the woman's figure. Here too, the gaze is firm and rigid, gazing intently at the viewer.
The style focuses on the figure of the young girl, in which the background takes up almost the entire surface of the painting, without detracting from the expressiveness of the subject, who displays an intense and expressive gaze. The choice of soft, blended colors towards the figure creates a suspended atmosphere. The outline is not defined, creating a sense of incompleteness, underscoring the introspective nature of the portrait. The detail of the eyes creates interest by capturing the soul of the figure. Overall, a delicate and mysterious character is evident.
Born in Modena in June 1930, he graduated from the A. Venturi Art Institute in 1947. At a young age, he attended the studios of great masters such as Sironi and Carrà. It was the latter who placed particular respect and trust in him. From 1954 to 1956, he was selected for prizes such as the "Triennale Giovanile di Roma", "Marzotto", "FP Michetti", "Biennali Milanesi alla Permanente", "Avezzano", "Premi Cesenatico", etc. In 1957, he won 23 prizes in provincial, regional, and national extemporaneous exhibitions. He arrived in Milan, where he held his first major solo exhibition at the Galleria L'Annunciata, directed by Bruno Grossetti, introduced by Mario Fin, and inaugurated by Carrà himself. In 1958, he joined the Galleria "La Fontanella" directed by Aedo Galvani in Rome, where he lived for 15 years. In 1964, RAI devoted a lengthy feature to him in the prestigious cultural television program "L'Approdo." In 1965, he was awarded the gold medal by the Prime Minister at the Campidoglio for the best exhibition on Via Margutta. In 1971, with the death of his exclusive dealer, he retreated to Levizzano Rangone (MO), almost a voluntary hermitage. One of his last exhibitions took place in 1991 at the Sala del Paradisino in Modena. One of his works, depicting the Crucifixion and the Stations of the Cross, is housed in the Pinacoteca d'Arte Moderna in the Vatican. From May 18th to June 8th, the painter was on display at the Villa Rangoni Macchiavelli in Maranello and at Palazzo Rangone in the ancient village of Castelvetro di Modena.
