Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. Ermenegildo Angilella's landscapes are characterized by a sense of the sublime in the presence of nature, but in a more intimate version. His works are often conceived as large vistas in which the human presence, when contemplated, small and solitary, seems almost lost at the center of the work.
Ermenegildo Angilella's landscape style is grounded in a keen sense of color and a direct, flowing application of color. With just a few touches of color, the painter manages to construct his subjects, ensuring a great immediacy in both landscapes and life reproductions. It can therefore be said that Angilella's stylistic register undoubtedly stems from a distinct impressionistic influence, but this is taken to the extreme of immediacy and rapid execution. In this way, just like the Impressionists, Angilella captures the vibrations of light and atmosphere on objects, yet at the same time exerts a more pronounced synthesis of sensory data, achieving a highly lyrical representation of reality. Angilella's palette reflects this lyrical intimacy with nature and reality, adopting a chromatic palette that avoids excess while remaining respectful of the sensory element.
Ermenegildo Angilella was born in Villarosa (Enna) in 1932 and passed away in Milan in 2017. After traveling the world, he settled in the Lombardy capital. Initially a figurative painter, he then entered a new dimension of "futuristic" art, aiming to represent time and space, effectively becoming the founder of "figurative futurism." At the closing ceremony of the 34th edition of the "S. Margherita Ligure-Franco Delpino" International Literary Prize, which took place on October 23, 2011, at Villa Durazzo, the artist was present as a "guest of honor," receiving the "Tigulliana" Award from President Giovanni Giosuè Chiesura, Artistic Director Marco Delpino, and Enzo Sorvino, CEO of the "Progetto Santa Margherita Ligure" company.
