Description of the work
Description of the work
We are faced with a full-length female portrait. The lady, presumably of upper-class social standing, is sitting in a relaxed, almost lascivious posture on a chair. She is elegantly dressed, a long, wide-brimmed dress. She leans slightly forward, crossing her legs, revealing part of them and her feet clad in elegant shoes. She appears to have just returned from a tiring day. She still wears a wide-brimmed hat, and her arm, resting relaxed on the chair, holds an umbrella. In this painting, we find Miraglia's signature style. Quick, dense, and textured brushstrokes. He creates a glimpse into his world: early twentieth-century Naples. He explores genre scenes ranging from public places to events in private homes. We might say this is one of his portraits of noblewomen. A moment of personal reflection, a moment of introspection. We glimpse the lessons he learned from the Impressionists. Quick, intuitive brushstrokes explore the moment, creating dashes of light with admirable lightness. Ermogene Miraglia was born in 1907 in Naples, a climate of rapid change that drew on the innovations in painting that had pervaded art since the late 19th century. A self-taught painter, he was primarily influenced by the achievements of French Impressionism, but also by native painters such as Antonio Mancini and Vincenzo Irolli. From these masters, he inherited a taste for a thick, dense pictorial impasto that gave his paintings a dense, textured surface. Miraglia formed a close friendship with Irolli, and it was thanks to him that he learned and further developed his techniques, applying thick brushstrokes and palette knives with rich colors, and how to create highlights and shadows through a skillful choice of colors. His subjects narrate the life of his city, whether bustling markets teeming with people or interiors with intimate scenes where he observes families going about their daily lives. His success is confirmed by the many national and international exhibitions featuring his paintings.
