Description of the work
Description of the work
This type of subject can be classified within the metaphysical aesthetic. The artistic movement founded by Giorgio De Chirico reclaims images that already exist, familiar to the collective imagination. However, it creates an effect of alienation through the process of displacement, that is, the sudden appearance of an object outside its usual context, or through condensation, the fusion of multiple objects into a single entity. Metaphysical art is also distinguished by the ostentatiously illusory nature of its images. This work by Ettore Aldo Del Vigo fits perfectly into these aesthetic canons, presenting the mysterious appearance of two figures in a still, silent atmosphere. The whole is achieved with a hyperrealist, provocative, and illusory language.
The manner in which the subject was depicted draws inspiration from hyperrealist currents. Hyperrealism aims for a totally objective representation of reality: in this sense, the hyperrealist aesthetic also constitutes a paradox, often consciously sought by artists. Indeed, thanks also to the use of very aggressive techniques and the use of bright color palettes, a rendering of the figuration is achieved so pure that it appears illusory, deliberately fake. Del Vigo's hyperrealism focuses on his apparitions of figures constructed from the fusion of different objects. The landscape conveys a sense of immobility, of unreal suspension.
Ettore Aldo Del Vigo was born in 1952 in Basel, Switzerland, to a family of Italian immigrants. Devoted to drawing from childhood, he was particularly drawn to surrealism, which he defined as the "pure essence of inner truth." In 1976, he moved to Sassari, Sardinia, and came into contact with various local artists. After participating in numerous competitions and group art exhibitions, he successfully held his first solo exhibition in 1978. In 1998, he decorated the headquarters of the INA. In 1999, he created a series of paintings for the Church of St. Paul the Apostle in Sassari, and in 2000, he joined Otto Rapp's "Visionary Art Movement" and later Santiago Ribeiro's "International Surrealism Now," which led to a series of traveling exhibitions in Portugal. In 2004 he was commissioned to create a series of paintings for the Reception Hall at the Embassy in London. In 2015 he was appointed artistic director of the "TianXing international art association" in China and in 2016 he founded the "MovimentoSurrealistaContemporaneo" and also in 2016 he joined the ArtBank based in China.
