Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consists of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art the "Still Life" also becomes a way of interpreting reality, as it did for the Cubists or Giorgio Morandi.
In this watercolor, Eugenio Azzocchi creates a thoroughly abstract work, in which reality, through a process of reduction, is translated into a system of lines and colors. The bold black line hints at the shape of the objects and dictates the work's rhythm, based on curved lines. The space between the lines is filled with rapid brushstrokes of watercolor, which, with thin, transparent glazes, define the surfaces of the objects and the spaces between them.
Eugenio Azzocchi was born in Gavignano in 1910 and passed away in Jesi in 1979. Ordained a priest, he also served as an army chaplain in Africa during World War II. In 1958, he moved permanently to the Carmelite convent in Jesi. Meanwhile, he had already attended the Art Institute and the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1959, his first exhibition took place at the Jesi civic club, followed by other exhibitions in various Italian cities. In addition to being a painter, he was also a poet and musician.
