Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

Eugenio Cecconi is a typical representative of 19th-century academic painting. His formal quality is remarkable and refined in his depiction of a landscape with a perfect naturalistic rendering. The composition is airy, harmonious, and balanced. Space and light are measured by color, which fades with delicate tonal transitions. There is a precise atmospheric fusion, thanks also to the use of a quicker, more cursive line in the description of certain details.

Eugenio Cecconi was a painter born in Livorno in 1842 and died in Florence in 1903. He initially studied law, but soon abandoned his legal practice to devote himself entirely to painting. He became involved with the Macchiaioli movement and favored landscapes. He exhibited extensively in Florence until, facing financial hardship, he returned to Livorno and opened a painting school.
