Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. The present work bears on the back, in addition to the artist's signature, a dedication to Giovanni Fattori, leader of the Macchiaioli group. This canvas was likely a gift from Cecconi to his illustrious colleague and friend.
This canvas, which has a sketchy quality compared to Eugenio Cecconi's official work, reveals an unusual side of this artist, closely associated with the Macchiaioli group. Indeed, we can appreciate a more spontaneous and instinctive Cecconi, compared to his airy and balanced compositions. The lines used to depict this small portion of nature are sketchy; the forms come to life with a few quick strokes. There is a prevailing impressionistic quality, indicating the desire to create a work fully in keeping with the plein air aesthetic. Color predominates, both in the description of space, through tonal variations, and in the capture of all the light vibrations, with the dense hatching of the brushstrokes.
Eugenio Cecconi was a painter born in Livorno in 1842 and died in Florence in 1903. He initially studied law, but soon abandoned his legal practice to devote himself entirely to painting. He became involved with the Macchiaioli movement and favored landscapes. He exhibited extensively in Florence until, facing financial hardship, he returned to Livorno and opened a painting school.
