Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings.
Eugenio Degani is an artist who always favors the full expressiveness of color. Within this context, we can admire how in this work the painter proposes a Divisionist technique, in which the application is based on broad strokes of color. The image recomposes itself in the viewer's eye, yet it is very synthetic, clearly reflecting an Expressionist aesthetic.
Eugenio Degani was a Veronese painter, born in 1923 and died in 2000. He trained under the guidance of Maestro Trentini at the Cignaroli Academy. In the 1950s, he collaborated with Giuseppe Marchiori and Renato Birolli. In 1951, he participated in the Verona Biennale and in 1955 in the Rome Quadrennial. He became known especially in 1957 thanks to the traveling exhibition "Young Italian Painting," which visited foreign cities such as Moscow, Prague, Budapest, and Sofia. In 1961, he moved to Paris, where he came into contact with the School of Nice and the Nouveau Réalisme movement through his acquaintance with Arman.
