Description of the work
Description of the work
Cleopatra was queen of Egypt and one of the most iconic figures in ancient history. The queen belonged to the Ptolemaic dynasty, the Macedonian family that ruled Egypt after the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC. In 48 BC, after the arrival of Julius Caesar, she allied herself with him, and their relationship was not only political but also romantic, leading numerous artists to draw inspiration from their story from an artistic and literary perspective. After Caesar's death in 44 BC, Mark Antony became his ally and lover. Iconographically, in Egyptian representations, Cleopatra is often depicted as a queen-pharaoh, with regal and divine attributes. She wears the Nemes (striped headdress), the crown of Hathor, and is often accompanied by symbols of royalty such as the flabellum and the shepherd's crook. Some statues and reliefs depict her with the vulture-shaped headdress, associated with the goddess Mut or the goddess Isis, to emphasize her divinity. Its symbolism is close to the symbol of seduction and power. Eva Hodinova's style is very distinctive, and in this case, the woman depicted is indeed the Queen of Egypt. Her image, however, is almost completely obscured by the overlying material. Her works draw on an innate sensitivity to color combined with an ability to incorporate a materialistic aspect with strong emotional impact and metaphorical intent. Born in Prague, Eva Hodinova moved to Italy in 1968. She graduated from Pragoděv High School in Prague in 1964, subsequently attending František Emler's studio in Prague and the Brera Academy of Fine Arts. In addition to her artistic education, she has attended numerous courses, including engraving, restoration, mural fresco, and Raku ceramics. She has had numerous solo exhibitions and participated in numerous international art competitions. She also managed the Angerese Cultural Center and the Galleria Studio d'Arte Liberty in Angera from 1980 to 2016. She is a member of Atelier Capricorno in Cocquio Trevisago, the Association of Free Artists of the Province of Varese, and the Association of Ceramics Artists SVUK-Praga Czech Republic. Her drawings and prints have been included in the Sgarbi Collection, in addition to her works published in the art book "Gli artisti nella Collezione Sgarbi." He is a member of the Museo della Permanente in Milan.
