Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
Specifically, the language used to depict the subject draws inspiration from hyperrealist currents. Hyperrealism aims for a completely objective representation of reality: the artist's desire is to reproduce what he sees without any interpretation. In this sense, the hyperrealist aesthetic also constitutes a paradox, often consciously sought by artists. Indeed, thanks also to the use of very aggressive techniques, inspired by the world of advertising, and the use of bright color palettes, a rendering of the naturalistic element is achieved so pure as to appear illusory, deliberately artificial. In this context, Ezio Tarantelli's excellent painting technique is highlighted. As we can see, he is capable of a truly photographic reproduction of sensory data. And, in particular, in this work we can observe the exceptional virtuosity in the rendering of the man's face, marked by wrinkles and the passage of time, the extraordinary variety of fish, and the precision of every detail of the nautical world (note the complex reproduction of various types of knots).
As we can see from the execution of this work, Ezio Tarantelli is essentially a hyperrealist painter. He is distinguished by an excellent painting technique that allows him to reproduce real objects photographically. His painting style draws on classical and traditional models, but Tarantelli reinterprets them with a distinctly contemporary sensibility.
