Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
In this painting, Francesco Capuano demonstrates the full quality of his painting. The artist possesses a high-level technique that allows him to achieve a perfect naturalistic rendering, even in his depictions of animals. Everything is depicted with meticulous attention to detail. Francesco Capuano can be considered an heir to a Romantic, Neapolitan landscape style, which focused more on the countryside than on seascapes. However, his painting is much more objective, characterized by a plastic exaltation of natural elements.
Francesco Capuano, Naples 1854 - after 1908. After completing his scientific studies in 1875, Capuano enrolled at the Academy of Naples under the guidance of G. Smargiassi and A. Carrillo. He specialized in landscape painting, often with large-scale paintings devoid of figures (Paesaggio, Naples, Galleria dell'Accademia). He exhibited in Naples from 1879 to 1906, in Turin in 1880 (Dal lavoro), in Venice in 1887 (Petriera), in Rome in 1889 (Inverno) and in 1908 (Gli ultimi raggi).
