Francesco Capuano - Landscape

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

Francesco Capuano can be considered an heir to a Romantic, Neapolitan landscape style, which focused more on the countryside than on seascapes. Francesco Capuano, Naples 1854 - after 1908. After completing his scientific studies in 1875, Capuano enrolled at the Academy of Naples under the guidance of G. Smargiassi and A. Carrillo. He specialized in landscape painting, often with large-scale paintings devoid of figures (Paesaggio, Naples, Galleria dell'Accademia). He exhibited in Naples from 1879 to 1906, in Turin in 1880 (Dal lavoro), in Venice in 1887 (Petriera), in Rome in 1889 (Inverno) and in 1908 (Gli ultimi raggi).
