Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Artist Francesco Carini's style is distinguished by a pictorial approach that strikes a balance between naturalism and an expressionistic rendering of the subject. He begins with sensory data, which he faithfully reproduces in his works. However, in his pictorial approach, which relies primarily on color, the formal rendering takes on a decidedly expressionist character. The application of color, in fact, appears almost gestural and causes a marked disintegration of the objects' forms. This means moving beyond an impressionistic interpretation of nature in favor of an expressionistic language, which seeks a decidedly emotional rendering of the reality depicted.
Francesco Carini was born in Sondrio in 1883, and studied under the painter, decorator, and caricaturist Giuseppe Palanti in Milan. During the 1940s, he held several solo exhibitions in Milan, at the Galleria Balzani in 1943, the Galleria Internazionale in 1949, and the Galleria Gavioli in 1949. Some of his works are now held at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Milan and the Museo Valtellinese di Storia e Arte in Sondrio, but most of his work is scattered among various private collections in the Valtellina area. He passed away in Caspoggio in 1959.
