Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as an independent subject began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world, as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers were depicted not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also became a way of interpreting reality.
This vase of flowers is attributed to Fausto Codenotti, best known for his graphic and illustrative work, which makes him one of the leading exponents of Art Nouveau in Italy. This painting is strongly influenced by the spirit of Art Nouveau, starting with its subject matter; the oriental vase reflects the Secessionist culture's interest in Eastern art. In its execution, the artist relies primarily on the expressive qualities of color, even though the objects appear to have a defined plasticity, immersed in a concrete space. Codenotti, in fact, remains firmly rooted in phenomenal reality, because even with his colorful, extremely veiled and transparent brushstrokes, he manages to delineate the essence of his subjects, imbuing them with expressive vigor. In this vase of flowers, along with the other objects, the effect of light is crucial. Through the use of color, the artist manages to characterize the subject with vivid and lucid reflections, both on the petals and on the glass surfaces of the objects. And it is precisely in these opalescent flashes that we recognize the most significant contribution of the Art Nouveau aesthetic in the composition of this painting.
The work has been attributed to Fausto Codenotti, a Brescian painter born in 1875 and who died in 1963. He was one of the most important representatives of Art Nouveau graphic art in Italy, a master of ornamentation of considerable skill, a painter, sketcher, and book illustrator. In January 1902, he exhibited his painting "St. Cecilia in Ecstasy" in a city shop and also participated in several exhibitions.
