Description of the work
Description of the work
The work depicts the island of San Giorgio, a famous Venetian island, a small tourist destination now dedicated to art and culture, best known for its panoramic skyline centered around the church of San Giorgio Maggiore and its bell tower. In this case, the artist chooses to explore a gloomy atmosphere, a sky marked by stormy clouds.
The work is characterized by a graphic and geometric style, where the composition is rigorously calibrated. The artist applies a three-thirds scheme, where the lower part is entirely dedicated to the sea, while the upper two-thirds explore the atmosphere. The surfaces of the buildings are deliberately simplified, the chiaroscuro reduced, resulting in a clarity and precision of form that, however, does not become rigid, thanks to the delicate choice of colors.
Self-taught artist Fabio Failla was born in Lucca in 1917. Failla's painting developed during his move to Florence, where he had the opportunity to observe the great Tuscan artistic tradition, and then continued his training in the studio of the painter Vagnetti. In 1939, he participated in the Second World War and was imprisoned by the Germans, managing to escape and take refuge in Pollenza, in the Marche region. 1946 marked a turning point in his artistic career, as he decided to move to Rome, where he began exhibiting. His first solo show took place in 1948 at the Chiurazzi Gallery. In the 1950s, he participated in the Venice Biennale and exhibited at the Rome Quadriennale. During this period, he also traveled to the United States, where he continued to exhibit. He died in Rome in 1987.
