Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Fabio Grassi is a master of symbolist landscapes. The lone tree in an almost metaphysical landscape is the undisputed protagonist of his views. For Fabio Grassi, trees are the image of existential complexity, whether standing alone in a rarefied landscape or bent by the elements, as in this case. This symbolist and existential complexity inherent in Fabio Grassi's trees is also reflected in the technical and formal execution of his works. This artist's style, in fact, stems from a naturalistic vision, but it is transcended into a symbolic dimension through a simplicity that does not entirely conform to perceptible reality. In this way, the artist achieves that magical dimension that transforms the landscape into its symbolic meaning.
Fabio Grassi was born in Massa in 1956 and graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara in 1978. Today he lives and works in his hometown, but the typical Tuscan landscape of the region's hilltop town is in his heart and soul. Many might call it a "postcard" landscape, but in Grassi's work, it holds a powerful symbolic meaning. Indeed, Fabio Grassi's work is an entire metaphor. The landscape, and consequently the tree he depicts almost obsessively, represents life.
