Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the equestrian monument, or the man on horseback, has very ancient origins. It dates back to the classical world, the earliest example of which is the "Rampin Knight," and it had a fundamental political importance for Roman art. Generally, these are sculptures in the round, but there are also cases where this subject appears on painted supports. The theme of the man on horseback has pervaded the entire history of art, not only Western art, and has become a subject of research for contemporary artists such as Marino Marini, Arturo Martini, and Aligi Sassu. The prints exemplify Fabrizio Clerici's subject matter, with his surrealistic inventions, brimming with evocative and cultured references. From a strictly formal perspective, these works allow us to see a different approach to execution than Clerici's usual approach. In these prints, the artist experiments with execution methods that differ from his usual hyperrealism, developing faster, more instinctive techniques that nonetheless retain expressiveness. Fabrizio Clerici, born in Milan in 1913 and died in Rome in 1993, was a painter, engraver, and set designer. He was an eclectic artist whose compositional matrix was open to numerous influences, which Clerici was able to rework through the sensibilities of his era: from Giovan Battista Piranesi to Athanasius Kircher, from Caspar David Friedrich to Arnold Böcklin. An internationally renowned artist, his works have been exhibited at the MOMA and the Guggenheim in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, and the Vatican Museums.
