Fabrizio D'Ottavi - Pinocchio on the Tricycle

During the 1950s and 1960s, the so-called poetics of the object began to spread in European and American art. Harking back to the readymades of Dadaist memory, a new wave of groups or movements repurposed everyday objects as works of art. The departure from traditional Dada lay in the strong influence of Abstract Expressionism, which led to the reconfiguration of objects with new languages ​​and new stimuli. Fabrizio D'Ottavi's pictorial production draws inspiration from this poetics, reproducing vintage and modern objects, which are central to his work.

Although modern antiques are the central focus of Fabrizio D'Ottavi's work, his pictorial conception departs from the poetics of New Dada in terms of the formal form of his paintings. Indeed, the form pursued by this artist is recognized through an exquisitely hyperrealist language. The object is impeccably reproduced, and the painting is conceived as if it were a true photograph. This is possible thanks to Fabrizio D'Ottavi's excellent technique, based on a perfect realistic rendering and a subtle painterly quality, just enough to integrate the forms into the neutral, decontextualized space. Against the black background, the light strikes the object, bringing out its full plasticity.

Fabrizio D'Ottavi was born in Rome in 1963. He graduated as a Master of Arts in graphic design and advertising photography from the Silvio D'Amico Art Institute. He began working at a young age with advertising agencies and music magazines as a layout artist and illustrator. For many years, he worked as a set designer and decorator, while also collecting various modern antiques. His passion for vintage and collecting was reflected in his paintings. His first solo exhibition was held in 2004 at Ada Egidio's Collezionando Gallery in Rome. In 2008 and 2009, he successfully participated in the modern and contemporary art auctions at the Antonina auction house in Rome. In 2010, he presented his new works to the public at the Spazio Novecento in Rome.
