Biography

His father Alessandro, a blacksmith by profession, chose to name his children with patriotic names, and Trento, the ninth child of thirteen, had a sister named Trieste and a brother Vittorio; it was his elementary school teacher who discovered his talent by having him make small drawings that he kept; the first drawing preserved by the artist dates back to 1922. . After his first studies he went to Milan , at the Liceo and then at the Brera Academy , from 1931 to 1939. His teacher was Aldo Carpi ^[2] for five years, with whom he established a strong bond; Longaretti defined himself as the most Carpian of his students, while his fellow students were Cassinari , Morlotti , Arturo Martini , Aldo Bergolli and Ibrahim Kodra . He began to exhibit his works in 1936 at the Littoriali della cultura e dell'arte . His artistic style can be found in the current trend of the magazine Corrente , together with Morlotti ^[3] , Guttuso , Sassu and Vedova . In 1939 , he had to leave the school in Brera to fulfill his military obligations during the Second World War , and was sent first to Slovenia , then to Sicily and in 1943 to Kosovo . The collection of drawings and sketches he made during his experience of the war years is vast. In 1942 he took part in the Venice Biennale and in the Exhibition of Artists in Arms in Rome at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni ^. The following year he exhibited in Bergamo . With the end of the war he was able to resume his full work: in addition to painting and graphics, he also devoted himself to frescoes , stained glass , and mosaics . In 1948, 1950, and 1956 he again participated in the Venice Biennale, while he was at the Rome Quadrennial in 1952. In 1953 he won the competition for the chair of painting at the Carrara Academy in Bergamo , succeeding Achille Funi . He directed the Academy until 1978. , a position he leaves of his own free will. His artistic career, which covers a wide range of years from 1937 to 2016, allows us to tell in an emotional way the story and encounters of a life, from childhood, in particular the experience of the war period and the suffering of a Jewish people, which the painter always sees on the move, are an important element of his artistic activity Longaretti associates the journey of the Jewish people with what he calls the "Driven Out at Night" , with refugees, with poor people, with those who are forced out of work, with those who flee on boats, with those who seek a happy life. . In 2009 , the Italian Cultural Institute in New York held an exhibition of his work, 41 years after his previous one. That same year, the Credito Bergamasco bank in Bergamo inaugurated an exhibition of his still lifes. In 2016 , on the occasion of his hundredth birthday, the city of Bergamo celebrates him with a series of initiatives. The artist died on the morning of June 7, 2017 , at the Hospice in Bergamo, where he was hospitalized due to complications due to his age.
