Description of the work
Description of the work
In 1867, "Storia Veneta" was published in Venice in a few hundred copies. It reconstructs the thousand-year history of the Venetian Republic and the entire Veneto region, collected in large, evocative plates drawn by Giuseppe Gatteri and accompanied by a sober yet clear text by Francesco Zanotto. The original work, in two volumes, quickly fell victim to constant alterations due to the petty demands of the antiquities market, which dismembered the volumes and dispersed the prints, and is now virtually unobtainable. The volume has been republished, encompassing not only the history and episodes that formed the historical essence of the lagoon city but also those of the various Venetian lordships that, during its expansion on the mainland, Venice repeatedly confronted, defeated, and subdued. Thus was formed the Venetian hinterland that allowed the Serenissima to represent, until the 17th century, one of the most important state groups in all of Europe, feared for its power on land and especially at sea, since it represented such a military and economic bulwark that for many years, throughout the entire eastern Mediterranean basin, it alone bore the brunt of the struggle the Christian West was forced to wage to prevent the advance of the Muslim Turks and the consequent collapse of our civilization. The Tablets thus act as spokesmen and recall the power, pride, and even the true glory of that complex group of Venetian families who gave substance and moral form to the history of Venice.
