Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and Modern Ages, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. In this work, Fausto Battelli prefers to draw inspiration from the simple and immediate everyday life of a lively city scene.
In his paintings, Fausto Battelli draws inspiration from a hyperrealist aesthetic, yet interprets it with a popular and imaginative edge. His views of Rome convey the authenticity of a working-class city through the scenic creation of perfect backdrops, rendered with a miniature technique. Above all, the execution is grounded in a hyperrealistic language. There is no pictorialism, no atmospheric impressions to indicate the fusion between subject and space. Everything is illuminated by a uniform light that unifies the work in a desire for pure objectivity.
Fausto Battelli (Rome, 1934 – Rome, February 11, 2018) was an Italian painter and photojournalist. In the 1950s and 1960s, he embarked on a career as a photojournalist, immortalizing the protagonists of Rome's dolce vita. After the 1960s, he devoted himself increasingly to painting, becoming known and appreciated especially for his painted bas-reliefs. From the 1970s onward, he held solo and group exhibitions in Europe, America, and Australia.
