Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
A typical work of Federico Spoltore's portraiture. The interpretation of the subject is entirely naturalistic, leaving no room for any subjective allusion. The artist strives to render every detail as realistically as possible, as if it were a photographic image. Spoltore's masterful technique allows him to achieve this perfect naturalism, even in a pencil and charcoal drawing.
Federico Spoltore was a painter from Lanciano, born in 1902. He was best known for his portraits, for which he received many official commissions. His portraits of Mussolini and Hitler during his visit to Italy are particularly famous. He also painted portraits of Stalin, Truman, Einstein, and Pope Pius XII.
