Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Federigo Severini's painting style reveals a post-Impressionist maturity. The composition is entirely compressed into the foreground, allowing no spatial depth. The painter's aim is not to capture the sensory aspect of the subject, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstroke, rich in texture, intervenes, fleshing out the objects, breaking them down into different planes, recording the vibrations of light and life within them. The sensory aspect, therefore, is completely transcended in a complex conception of pictorial practice in which the artist's gestures themselves play a fundamental role. Chromatically, the entire surface of the work is blended with a balanced palette of references and correspondences, with a preference for earthy colors and subdued tones.
Federigo Severini (Pisa, 1888 – 1962). An eclectic architect, engineer, academic, designer, and painter, he was among the artists who most influenced Pisa's architectural and urban planning scene in the first half of the twentieth century. In the late 1950s, he abandoned his teaching and design career and intensified his painting, exhibiting in various solo and group exhibitions. Federigo Severini debuted as a painter at the age of thirteen with Casa di Nando (Nando's House, National Museum of San Matteo). The subjects of his paintings are familiar places: the Pisan countryside between San Rossore and the Monti Pisani, the countryside towards Marina di Pisa and the Bocca d'Arno.
