Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.
This work is part of an emblematic series of canvases that frame Felice Canonico's Informal period. In this painter, Informalism takes on a distinctive character, as the artist's strokes seem to tend toward geometry. Thus, in elaborate compositions, the free-flowing paint interacts with the rationality established by straight lines and squares. The brushwork is dense, as in the best Informal tradition, but Canonico's distinctiveness lies precisely in this convergence of gesture and geometry.
Felice Canonico is a painter originally from Messina, born in 1922. He spent most of his career in Milan, where he moved in the 1950s and where he passed away in 1997. His entire artistic output is characterized by a relentless exploration that saw him shift his expressive language several times. For this reason, Felice Canonico is one of the most interesting figures in twentieth-century painting.
