Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consists of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art the "Still Life" also becomes a way of interpreting reality, as it did for the Cubists or Giorgio Morandi.
In this still life, we can already sense the fundamental role that the form of objects will play throughout Felice Casorati's art, even before he reached the pure volumes of Magic Realism. In this case, we have a more Cezanne-like and proto-Cubist interpretation, as the objects, breaking the rules of traditional perspective and arranging themselves according to multiple viewpoints, are laid out across the surface of the painting. Even on a pictorial level, Casorati here follows a post-Impressionist approach; we can see how the brushstrokes, arranged on various planes, form the object's structure.
Felice Casorati, born in Novara in 1883 and died in Turin in 1963, was one of the key figures in the phase in 20th-century Italian painting that ushered in a return to tradition and the exaltation of plasticity. In this sense, he made a fundamental contribution to the founding of the Novecento Italiano movement, even though he always remained independent from Margherita Sarfatti's group. Casorati's aesthetic, which would later be included in the so-called Magic Realism movement, is based on a revival of the 15th-century tradition of Italian painting, namely a return to the exaltation of volume and perspective in a pure and crystalline pictorial manner.
