Felice Ludovisi - Harmonies of Silence

The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consisted of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to experiment with naturalistic or photographic reproductions of reality, with contemporary art, the "Still Life" also became a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory aspect.

Felice Ludovisi's pictorial language relies primarily on the expressive qualities of color. The drawing structure and perspective grid are completely dismantled to make way for the force of the brushstrokes. Indeed, the vigor with which Ludovisi creates his works is such that it borders on the gesturality typical of Abstract Expressionism. However, the artist remains firmly anchored to phenomenal reality, because even with his colorful brushstrokes, he manages to delineate the essence of the basket of fruit with expressive vigor. We also note an accentuation of color synthesis in the construction of space. The rendering of the subject is even more abstract, determined by splashes of diluted paint. In this Expressionist context, color takes on Fauvist tones, generating the violent contrasts sought by the painter. The meaning of color, in fact, goes far beyond naturalism and takes on a highly symbolic, evocative, and spiritual significance.

Felice Ludovisi, Viterbo 1917-2012. He trained as an artist in Rome, arriving at the age of fifteen. There, he earned his high school diploma in art and attended the Faculty of Architecture. In 1945, he exhibited in a group show, and the following year, he held his first solo exhibition at the Galleria San Marco. In 1948, his works were exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. In 1968, a major anthology was dedicated to Ludovisi, which, after being exhibited at the Palazzo dei Priori in Viterbo, later traveled to the Ente Premi Roma, Palazzo Barberini. On June 2, 1985, at the recommendation of the Prime Minister, the President of the Republic awarded Felice Ludovisi the honor of Cavaliere di Gran Croce al Merito della Repubblica for artistic reasons. In 1987, at the suggestion of the Lazio Region's Department of Culture, the anthological exhibition Felice Ludovisi – Forty Years of Painting (1946-1986) was held in Rome at Palazzo Venezia. In 1998, his hometown dedicated the anthological exhibition 'Light and Color of Felice Ludovisi' to him. In 2003, his Genesis cycle, consisting of eight paintings previously exhibited at the Basilica of San Marco Evangelista in Rome, was exhibited in the Palatine Chapel of the Palazzo dei Priori in Viterbo.
