Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism. The human figure, especially the female figure, is central to Felice Vanelli's artistic research. In his full-length subjects and portraits, the Lodi-born artist has developed a language balanced between classicism and experimentation.
In this exquisitely crafted work, we can admire the technical prowess of Felice Vanelli in his portrayal of the human figure. He is an artist capable of a completely naturalistic rendering, characterized by a high level of formal purity. The contours are undefined, thanks to a sfumato technique that allows the subject to interact naturally with the space. Even in the monochrome, we can appreciate the interplay of shadow and light that enhances the figure's volumetric consistency. Furthermore, in this beautiful nude, despite a classic exaltation of the figure's plastic qualities, Vanelli pushes the boundaries of representation, adopting a somewhat expressionist formal language. Indeed, the linework is extremely synthetic (especially in the execution of the almost indistinguishable head and hair), imbuing this nude, yet concrete in its figuration, with profound existential vibrations.
Felice Vanelli was an artist originally from Lodi, born in 1936 and passed away in 2016. He trained at the Brera Academy and the Scuola Libera del Nudo. He later attended the Fresco School at the Sforza Castle. He created notable murals in the churches of Mirabello, Camairago, and Dovera. As a sculptor, he created several public monuments (the bronze Fountain with Maternity in Graffignana; the War Memorial "Harmony and Peace" in Castiraga; the elaborate concrete "Soldier's Piety" in Turano; the "Girl with the Rope" in Lodi; the "Game of Lips" in Senago; and "Barbarossa" in Lodi).
