Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
In this exquisitely crafted work, we can admire the technical prowess of Felice Vanelli in his portrayal of the human figure. He is an artist capable of a completely naturalistic rendering, characterized by a high level of formal purity, although in this face, we can see a more pronounced expressionistic deformation, expressed through a geometric exaltation of the plastic qualities. The contours are undefined, thanks to a sfumato effect that allows the subject to interact naturally with the space. Even in the monochrome, we can appreciate the interplay of shadow and light that enhances the figure's volumetric consistency.
Felice Vanelli was an artist originally from Lodi, born in 1936 and passed away in 2016. He trained at the Brera Academy and the Scuola Libera del Nudo. He later attended the Fresco School at the Sforza Castle. He created notable murals in the churches of Mirabello, Camairago, and Dovera. As a sculptor, he created several public monuments (the bronze Fountain with Maternity in Graffignana; the War Memorial "Harmony and Peace" in Castiraga; "The Soldier's Piety." In elaborate concrete in Turano: "Girl with the Rope" in Lodi; "The Game of Lips" in Senago; and "Barbarossa" in Lodi).
