Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has always been an artist's aspiration. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. Felice Vellan's pictorial production focused primarily on landscape. He was a masterful interpreter of both urban landscapes, with views of Turin and its parks, and mountain landscapes, where the artist best expressed his broad, classical naturalism.
Nature is the true protagonist of Felice Vellan's mountain landscapes. In his works, the viewer can fully immerse himself in the panoramas he depicts, almost feeling the mountain air he so loved. This is primarily thanks to his excellent technical skill, capable of depicting the landscape with extraordinary attention to detail in a convincing naturalistic interpretation with a classical feel. But Felice Vellan also introduces further elements of lyricism through his loose brushwork and the highlighting of the tonal values of the colors. In this way, the landscape appears unified in a coherent atmosphere and, at the same time, vibrant in an execution rich in freshness and immediacy.
Felice Vellan was a painter from Turin, born in 1889 and died in 1976. He trained at the Accademia Albertina and, later, attended the studio of Giovanni Guarlotti, from whom he inherited his passion for landscape.
In Turin, Felice Vellan founded the Evening School of Nude Art and was first a councilor and then vice president of the city's Artists' Circle.
He participated in many exhibitions, such as the Venice Biennale, the Rome Quadrennial, and the Turin Quadrennial, not only with paintings but also with engravings. He was present at the exhibition of the Society of Amateurs and Cultivators of Fine Arts in Rome in 1927 and at the Permanente in Milan in 1924 and 1931.
