Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
The work is part of a series of Graphics in which Felice Vellan uses a more synthesis
A heightened sense of phenomenal reality compared to easel painting. The subject is exalted in its plastic qualities and depicted with great realistic accuracy. But all this is achieved with a subtle, darting, and calligraphic line. The painter also uses a rapid hatching to further emphasize the play of shadows and washes of color to soften the objects.
Felice Vellan was a Turin-born painter, born in 1889 and died in 1976. He trained at the Accademia Albertina and later frequented the studio of Giovanni Guarlotti, from whom he inherited his passion for landscape. In Turin, Felice Vellan founded the Evening School of Nude Painting and served first as a councilor and then as vice president of the city's Artists' Circle. He participated in numerous exhibitions, such as the Venice Biennale and the Rome and Turin Quadrennials, not only with paintings but also with engravings. He exhibited at the exhibition of the Society of Amateurs and Cultivators of Fine Arts in Rome in 1927 and at the Permanente in Milan in 1924 and 1931.
