Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.

In her artistic production, Felicita Frai has developed a personal and highly recognizable expressive language. It is an aesthetic canon (which applies to both female figures and flowers) that lies midway between a naïve, playful, and libertarian spirit and the refinement of an illustrator. Indeed, the figure undergoes a process of simplification, but in an aesthetic sense that tends toward a dreamlike, fairytale dimension.

Felicita Frai, the pseudonym of Felice Frajova, was a Czech artist born in Prague in 1909. She moved to Italy in 1930, first to Trieste and then to Ferrara, where she studied with Achille Funi. In 1938 and 1948, she participated in the Venice Biennale. In the 1940s, she moved to Milan, where she frequented Giorgio de Chirico's studio and participated in the Triennale from 1945 to 1954. She was also a well-known illustrator. She passed away in 2010.
